Network Update for Friday, February 17, 2017

Operational Performance
We continue to experience service challenges and delays due to heavy rainfall in the Pacific Northwest. Yesterday, our Lakeside Subdivision, which runs between Pasco and Spokane, Washington, was forced out of service due to high water. The water began to subside this afternoon and BNSF maintenance crews are currently repairing the affected area. We estimate that the main track will be returned to service today, Friday, February 17 at 8:30 p.m. CST.



The operation continues to recover following the multiple service interruptions experienced in Montana last week which caused significant disruption to traffic flows across the Northern Corridor. As we reported, service was restored to our Hi Line Subdivision between Whitefish and Shelby, Mont. and while the number of total trains held remains high, we are taking all appropriate actions to strengthen productivity.

In addition to the challenges reported across the Northern Corridor, the current track outage in northern California due to flooding continues to impact traffic to/from the Pacific Northwest and California. The outage between Keddie and Oroville, Calif. has blocked our primary north-south route into and out of the state.

We continue to re-route as many trains as possible around impacted areas. We appreciate your patience and will continue to provide updates as we work to restore service.

Mississippi River Bridge at Memphis Maintenance Work
BNSF maintenance crews will continue the second phase of major rehabilitation work involving the Mississippi River Bridge at Memphis beginning Monday, February 20 and continuing through Tuesday, February 21. During this time, trains will be rerouted or held to allow BNSF crews to replace spans along the eastbound approach to the bridge. Customers may experience 24-48 hour delays (depending on the route) during the 48-hour maintenance window. This is the second of four planned maintenance windows that will allow crews to replace 51 bridge spans and their piers. We appreciate your patience as we make these necessary bridge upgrades to further improve our service.

Service Expectations for the Week Ahead
While the current storm system impacting California and Oregon is expected to taper off by early Sunday morning, more systems will make landfall throughout the week producing heavy rain across the foothills, Sierra Nevada and northern California. Massive flooding is expected throughout California, as well as 2-3 feet of snow across the higher elevations of the Sierra Nevada. Disruptions to logistical operations are possible over these regions including road closures, mudslides, and power outages. We will continue to closely monitor the potential for severe weather to impact our operations.

Below is a look at the key operational performance categories for the week ending February 16:

Total trains held for the week increased by nearly one percent with an average of 139.6 trains held versus 138.3 trains held during the prior week.

    Versus the February 2016 average: up by 282.4%
Total trains on the system was up by nearly two percent with an average of 1,452 trains on the system versus 1,429 trains during the prior week.

Locomotive velocity, measured in miles per day (MPD), was 283.7, which is up by three percent from the 275.5 MPD recorded the prior week.
    Versus the February 2016 average: down by 5.4%

Car velocity increased by more than three percent at 204.0 MPD versus 197.4 MPD recorded the prior week.
    Versus the February 2016 average: down by 10.4%

Train velocity, measured in miles per hour (MPH), was up by nearly one percent from the prior week at 17.5 MPH.
    Versus the February 2016 average: down by 19.7%

Total volume was down by more than five percent from the prior week with 193,061 units moved in Week 6 (ending February 11) versus 203,452 units in Week 5 (ending February 4).

Terminal dwell decreased by more than five percent from the prior week at 28.1 hours.
    Versus the February 2016 average: up by 10.3%
