New AAR Standards for Installation of Remote Monitoring Equipment

The following information is being provided for BNSF customers who apply monitoring equipment to their shipments and/or rail equipment and should be forwarded to the personnel engaged in the monitoring process.

The AAR has recently issued a Standard Operating Procedure for Installation of Remote Monitoring Equipment that became effective April 1, 2006. The purpose of the Standard is to establish uniform industry requirements and practices regarding the identification, location and installation of remote monitoring equipment (also known as RME).

The Standard’s procedures and practices apply to the full spectrum of RME (temperature, location, ride quality and other assorted monitoring devices) temporarily or permanently applied to rail shipments and/or lading moving in interchange service--whether applied by the customer or the carrier.

The ultimate goal of this uniform set of practices is to promote the safe, secure transport of rail cargo while minimizing the risk of service interruption associated with the misidentification of RME. Questions regarding the specific details and provisions of the Standard can be addressed to the AAR - Technical Standards at the address listed in the Circular.

BNSF’s Load and Ride Solutions Team is available to help resolve questions and concerns regarding RME and the Standard. Load and Ride Solutions can be contacted by telephone at 1-800-333-4686. The full text of the Standard can be found in the attached AAR Circular C-10286.
