Reloading National Pool Boxcars - Taking Advantage of Available Rail Capacity

As a customer receiving loaded boxcars, you may not be aware that some delivered cars can be reloaded even if they are not BNSF equipment. These boxcars are part of a national pool which the industry established over two decades ago. Rather than waiting for other BNSF equipment to arrive, reloading a national pool boxcar that is currently onsite will help reduce shipping delays and get additional empty boxcars delivered sooner.

Boxcars that are part of the national pool fall under the following designations:

National Pool Cars: Customers can reload national pool cars IF the carrier that delivers the car is listed in the revenue route of the outbound load.

  • All car initials TBOX, TOBX, TOFX, RBOX, ABOX, FBOX
  • AAR Pool IDs that begin with 999 (except 9990610, 9990611, 9990612, 9990613)
BNSF Cars: Customers can reload all cars with an AAR Pool ID that begins with 777 (which identifies BNSF cars), IF BNSF is listed in the revenue route of the outbound load.

Foreign Cars: Cars that do not match the above designations for National Pool or BNSF boxcars will need owning carrier approval to be reloaded. Please contact BNSF Equipment with any questions regarding reloading foreign boxcars.

To identify a boxcar's AAR Pool ID, customers can use either of the following e-tools available through the BNSF secure customer website:

Track Your Shipment
  • Enter the individual car number(s) to look up the Pool Number under Equipment Characteristics
Rail Central
  • Add "Pool ID- AAR" as a field on a Rail Central report to see the AAR Pool ID for all cars on the report
