BNSF Carbon Estimator Now Available on bnsf.com
We have heard from many of you that environmental issues play an important role in your decision-making process for transportation service providers. As you may know, rail is the most environmentally-friendly mode of land transportation and customers who ship by rail achieve significant environmental benefits.
In addition to helping reduce overall transportation costs, shipping with BNSF is part of an effective strategy to reduce your company’s carbon footprint. To help you understand the environmental impact of your current shipments, and to find out the carbon savings potential of your future shipments, we have developed a Carbon Estimator tool that quantifies the amount of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions that can be saved by using a BNSF carload or intermodal rail solution instead of truck only.
What is a “carbon footprint”?
A carbon footprint is a measure of the impact we have on the environment. It relates to the amount of GHG emissions produced when burning fossil fuels for electricity, heating or transportation-related activities. GHG emissions, in the form of carbon dioxide, are believed to be the primary cause of climate change.
How do I use the Carbon Estimator?
Simply enter in details about your current or potential shipments, such as commodity group and shipment type, total number of trailers, containers or carloads, total number of miles, and total weight of those shipments. The Estimator also allows you to reflect customized dray and long-haul requirements in your scenario.
After clicking “Calculate”, you will receive a summary of your results that can be exported to Excel for easy saving, emailing or printing. For more details, including step-by-step directions, see our Carbon Estimator flyer.
Where can I find the Carbon Estimator?
BNSF’s Carbon Estimator can be accessed from bnsf.com. Click on the green footprint or go to the Carbon Estimator page under the “Communities” tab, then Environmental Stewardship.

BNSF’s carbon emission estimator was formed in collaboration with ClearCarbon Consulting, Inc. to illustrate the estimated environmental benefit that is obtained by utilizing rail as part of your company’s supply chain. These carbon estimations rely on data sources including BNSF shipment history and internal shipping metrics, along with assumptions for route mileage calculation, trucking industry averages for empty miles, out-of-route miles, and fuel efficiency (Truck Assumption: 6.5 mpg highway, 6.1 mpg city), and other data sources such as the U.S. EPA’s Climate Leaders program emission factors (Direct Emissions from Mobile Combustion Sources, May 2008).
