UPDATE: Service Interruption on the Hi Line Subdivision in Montana

Yesterday, BNSF reported a service outage on our Hi Line Subdivision, which runs between Shelby and Whitefish, Montana, due to an avalanche near Marias Pass impacting both main tracks. This location, on the eastern side of Glacier National Park, received nearly five feet of snow from this latest winter storm and several more avalanches occurred since our initial report. The current estimated time for reopening one of the main tracks is now estimated at 11:59 p.m. CST tonight.

While we had hoped to restore service this afternoon, adverse weather conditions and the risk for additional avalanches limited our ability to clear impacted sections of track as well as ensure the safe movement of trains. We have worked closely with park officials throughout the day to assess damaged areas and conduct avalanche remediation efforts. Engineering crews will continue to work through the night to remove snow and restore service on our second main track.

We have implemented procedures, including the re-routing of some trains, to minimize this disruption as much as possible. However, customers may continue to experience significant delays on shipments designated to move through this corridor until operations have normalized.

BNSF will provide additional updates on any further developments.
