Service Update for Wednesday, May 28

This communication is intended to make our customers aware of a seasonal phenomenon that is expected to have a periodic but temporary impact on service over the next week. While winter is officially behind us, one of the effects of extreme sub-zero temperatures and heavy snowfall in the Northern Plains is that the spring thaw, combined with seasonal rains, have created some challenges for us that are somewhat typical during this time of year. In particular, “frost heaving,” which is a problem for transportation infrastructures like railways, will have periodic impact on our service along our Northern corridor this week.

Customers can expect to experience occasional delays and temporary interruptions, particularly for freight moving across a couple of key sections of the railroad between Minot and Grand Forks, ND and between Minot and Dilworth, MN, as BNSF crews repair tracks that are impacted by frost heaves.

This time of year, frost heaves occur when water under the surface freezes and then expands upward toward the surface. This frequent freezing and expansion activity creates pot-holes and ridges in roadways and along our railway tracks. Those ridges and pot-holes can quickly deteriorate an otherwise safe track surface and require frequent inspections and repairs.

For interruptions lasting more than 24 hours, we will issue our normal Service Interruption notices. However, interruptions from frost heaves are typically resolved within a shorter period.
