Service Update for Friday, March 6, 2015

As we reported yesterday in a Service Advisory, a BNSF crude oil unit train derailed yesterday afternoon in a rural area south of Galena, Illinois. BNSF promptly notified local and state officials, and our team is at the scene working closely with emergency personnel. There were no injuries reported.

In addition to assisting local residents and taking precautions against any environmental issues, we are working with federal investigators to assist with the investigation. Some trains may be re-routed and shipments moving through this corridor may experience delays of 24 to 48 hours while we address this incident. We will continue to share more details as information becomes available.

Overall, network train and car velocities were relatively unchanged from the prior week despite wintry weather, particularly across parts of the South, which caused some minor delays. As a warming trend across much of the U.S. takes hold, the changing weather pattern will usher in mostly dry conditions across the network with no major storms expected. Below zero temperatures will be absent from the North and Central Regions for the first time in several weeks during the upcoming period.

Below is a look at the key operational performance categories for the week ending March 3:

Total trains held for the week increased to an average of 84.6 versus 66.3 recorded the prior week, but is more than 79 percent better than the average recorded this same week in 2014. Total trains on the system was up 2.4 percent from the prior week with an average of 1,635 trains on the system.

Locomotive velocity, measured in miles per day (MPD), was 265.7 compared to 267.2 MPD the prior week. Locomotive dwell was down five percent from the prior week at 18.9 hours.

Car velocity was down slightly at 207.3 MPD versus 209.6 MPD recorded the prior week, but is more than 21 percent faster than the average recorded this same week in 2014.

Train velocity was also down 1.7 percent from the prior week at 17.4 miles per hour. This week's reported average remains more than 23 percent faster than one year ago.

Total volume was 186,435 units moved in Week 8 (ending February 28).

Terminal dwell was up slightly to 25.8 hours versus 25.2 hours the prior week, but is nearly 18 percent better than the average from this week in 2014.
