Upper Midwest Rail Operations Update

A major storm system spreading severe storms, high wind gusts (up to 40 miles per hour) and blizzard conditions will continue to affect the Upper Midwest region through Friday.

The Upper Midwest states most impacted include Wisconsin, Minnesota, Nebraska, Iowa, Missouri, Kansas and South Dakota. This storm could bring an additional 6 to 12 inches of snow and a return to sub-zero temperatures extending through next week. It is also forecasted to affect the Eastern U.S.

Although this most recent storm is causing some additional operational disruptions, BNSF expects conditions to continue to improve, and backlogs to gradually decrease.

BNSF continues to modify its Transportation Service Plan (TSP) to route traffic away from congested locations, and to coordinate and re-route shipments with eastern carriers through alternate interchange gateways as conditions warrant.

As mentioned in previous updates, customers tracing their freight may notice nonstandard routings, locations and interchanges. Some traffic re-routing could lead to longer overall transit times by several days than normal conditions.

We recognize the continuing impact that current conditions are having on our customers and we are committed to restoring service levels as quickly as possible.
