Service Update for Friday, April 10, 2015

The network continues to generate good fluidity as it builds momentum from the solid gains achieved over the past few weeks. In addition to the weekly operational performance improvements generated recently, we also moved more than 200,000 units of total volume in each of the past four weeks.

This week also marks the start of our peak capital maintenance period for the year. From now through October, we will have more than 50 “capital gangs” working across the network on the nearly 30 major line and terminal projects, as well as 270 bridge projects, planned for this year. As the work progresses, we will continue to implement procedures, such as the re-routing of some traffic, to minimize service disruptions.

We also continue to add to our fleet of nearly 8,000 locomotives. We have now taken delivery of more than 100 new locomotives this year, which is nearly one-third of our announced total for 2015. With these additional locomotives, we continue to ensure we are well-positioned to manage demand surges and provide trains with the power needed.

Below is a look at the key operational performance categories for the week ending April 7:

Total trains held for the week improved by 5.4 percent to an average of 70.0 versus 74.0 recorded the prior week.

Versus the same week last year: better by 75.0%
Versus the same week in 2013: better by 32.4%

Total trains on the system was down 2.3 percent from the prior week with an average of 1,667 trains on the system.

Locomotive velocity, measured in miles per day (MPD), was 282.3, which is up 1.4 percent from the prior week’s 278.4 MPD.

Locomotive dwell increased slightly more than two percent from the prior week at 17.6 hours.

Car velocity was up more than three percent at 221.8 MPD versus 215.2 MPD recorded the prior week.
Versus the same week last year: better by 23.0%
Versus the same week in 2013: better by 6.8%

Train velocity was up more than two percent from the prior week at 18.1 miles per hour.
Versus the same week last year: up 27.5%
Versus the same week in 2013: unchanged

Total volume exceeded 200,000 units for the fourth consecutive week with a strong 201,464 units moved in Week 13 (ending April 4).

Terminal dwell improved by slightly more than two percent to 23.8 hours versus 24.3 hours the prior week.
Versus the same week last year: better by 17.6%
Versus the same week in 2013: better by 1.7%
