Report: Preparation for Winter Storm Q

BNSF has initiated preparations for the major snow storm event predicted to continue from Wednesday through Friday, February 20-22.

BNSF Operating forces are coordinating the implementation of Winter Action Plans in the affected areas. These plans include activating rail snow plows, placement of mechanical and maintenance personnel, identifying reroute and bypass opportunities, and strategic planning of crew transport.

On BNSF’s North Region, snow will fall today and through the overnight hours across North Dakota and South Dakota, with a general 1-3 inches expected. Temperatures will fall below 0 degrees this morning across Wisconsin, Minnesota, South Dakota, North Dakota and Montana. Readings below minus 20 are expected across far northwestern Minnesota. Where possible, the North Region has already begun rerouting traffic away from the areas predicted to be heavily impacted.

On BNSF’s Central Region the storm will begin in Colorado, and move on to Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, Oklahoma, Missouri, and Arkansas, depositing up to a foot of snow in some areas and significant ice accumulation in others. If the storm path moves as predicted, customers can expect 48 hours of impact at the following terminals and yards: Lincoln, Kansas City Murray, Kansas City Argentine, and Galesburg.

On BNSF’s South Region, the forecast calls for up to 16 inches of snow in the high elevations of Arizona and New Mexico as the storm moves in from California, eventually reaching the Texas Panhandle and moving eastward. As it moves through Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi, large hail, damaging winds and tornadoes are predicted. Where possible, the South Region has already begun rerouting traffic away from the areas predicted to be heavily impacted.

Customers should anticipate delays of 24-48 hours on shipments moving through these areas.
