Service Update for Friday, January 9, 2015

The operation remained fluid this week despite a brutal blast of Arctic air accompanying the start of the new year. Below zero temperatures and blizzard conditions have affected many locations throughout the Midwest and Northern Plains. The frigid weather required BNSF to reduce train lengths across the northern portion of the network. These restrictions will remain in place through the weekend before temperatures return to more normal levels early next week.

Despite the harsh conditions, our team of over 300 Rapid Responders have helped keep the network running strong with just some minor weather-related delays. In addition, we continue to experience strong performance gains due to additional locomotive availability and reduced post-holiday season volumes.

BNSF also continues to manage service inconsistencies at ports in the Pacific Northwest and California due the ongoing labor dispute. With work slowdowns causing some disruptions, temporary restrictions on export/import traffic were briefly instituted and subsequently withdrawn as volumes proved manageable. BNSF is encouraged that the parties involved have recently agreed to mediation and we hope this leads to a resolution in the near future.

Below is a look at the key operational performance categories for the week ending January 6:

Total trains held for power for the week was an average of 4.9, which improved by more than eight percent from the prior week and is nearly 90 percent better than in the past month.

Total trains on the system was also down just over eight percent from the prior week with an average of 1,545 trains on the system.

Locomotive velocity, measured in miles per day (MPD), was 238.7 compared to 230.7 MPD the prior week. Locomotive dwell increased slightly to 24.2 hours versus 23.7 hours for the prior week.

Car velocity was better by nearly five percent at 196.4 MPD versus 187.6 MPD recorded the prior week.

Train velocity also improved, up over nine percent at 16.8 miles per hour.

System wide on-time performance was up nearly four percent to 84.6 percent for the week. Intermodal on-time performance increased by five percent to its highest weekly average in the past year at 92 percent.

Total volume was 168,713 units in Week 53. Due to how the days of the week fell on the calendar, 2014 was a year where we captured and reported unit volumes over a 53-week period versus the typical 52-week reporting period. The last time we recorded yearly volumes over a 53-week period was in 2008.

Terminal dwell was reduced by nearly seven percent at 25.9 hours compared to 27.8 hours the prior week.
