Service Update for Friday, January 22, 2016

The operation continues to perform well with good fluidity generated across the network this week. Overall velocity for cars, trains and locomotives all remain very strong, but each of the averages were slightly lower versus the previous week. The outbreak of extremely cold temperatures in the Northern Plains and upper Midwest, where several locations dropped to around -20 degrees earlier this week, caused some operating restrictions and minor service interruptions. Despite the adverse conditions in the North, average train speed for all BNSF trains was the fastest among all Class I railroads for the fourth consecutive week, according to reports filed with the Association of American Railroads (AAR) or by the railroad's own public reporting.

While no additional surge of Arctic air is expected during the upcoming week, a major winter storm is currently impacting the southeastern portion of the BNSF network. Winter storm warnings are in effect until this evening for portions of eastern Arkansas, northern Mississippi and nearly all of Tennessee, including Memphis. In addition to high winds, nearly six inches of snow is possible today in these areas. BNSF crews are monitoring the conditions closely to quickly address track issues and to implement any necessary procedures, including the re-routing of some traffic, to minimize service disruptions.

In the Pacific Northwest, our engineering crews have addressed several mudslides this week on our Scenic Subdivision between Seattle and Wenatchee, Washington. The slides temporarily blocked both main tracks in multiple locations yesterday, but all impacted areas have been cleared. More rain is forecasted for the area and we are positioned to respond quickly should any new blocking events occur.

Below is a look at the key operational performance categories for the week ending January 19:

Total trains held for the week was up by nearly 42 percent to an average of 33.6 versus 23.7 trains held the prior week.

    Versus the January 2015 average: better by 62.0%

Total trains on the system was up by two percent from the prior week with an average of 1,221 trains on the system.

Locomotive velocity, measured in miles per day (MPD), was 285.8, which is down by less than one percent from the prior week's 286.9 MPD.
    Versus the January 2015 average: better by 9.4%

Car velocity was down by two percent at 227.3 MPD versus 231.8 MPD recorded the prior week.
    Versus the January 2015 average: better by 9.6%

Train velocity was down by more than two percent from the prior week at 22.2 miles per hour.
    Versus the January 2015 average: better by 26.9%

Total volume was up by more than two percent from the prior week with 185,475 units moved in Week 2 (ending January 16).

Terminal dwell was up by more than three percent from the prior week at 24.8 hours.
    Versus the January 2015 average: better by 2.4%
