BNSF Addressing Ongoing Service Challenges in the Pacific Northwest

BNSF continues to address ongoing service challenges in the Pacific Northwest, while traffic flows on a portion of our Southern Transcon are returning to normal following a derailment earlier this week in eastern New Mexico.

As we reported to all impacted customers, a BNSF intermodal train derailed Wednesday morning near Melrose, New Mexico, which is located on the busy Clovis Subdivision. The incident was caused by a truck at a gated crossing. Nearly 70 trains were forced to hold while BNSF crews and contractors worked throughout the night to complete track repairs and cleanup the scene. Service was restored within 24 hours, however, some customers may continue to experience delays in their shipments until traffic flows through the area have fully normalized.

In the North Region, our operations teams are maintaining a sustained, round-the-clock effort toward improving velocity and fluidity to/from the Pacific Northwest. Progress has been made in some areas, however, train delays in the Greater Seattle/Tacoma area remain elevated. Congestion at terminals and facilities also remains a persistent issue impacting service performance.

While we have not experienced a significant service interruption in the area for nearly three weeks, another strong storm is currently impacting locations from Washington into northern California with strong winds and heavy rain. The risk for landslides remains elevated, and crews are monitoring susceptible areas closely. More wet weather is also expected during the next several days. As always, we will respond aggressively to any disruptions.
