BNSF Intermodal Leaning Load Inspection Policy

BNSF is focused on continuously improving the safety of our employees, customers, service providers and community. Ensuring safety is of the utmost importance when addressing a leaning intermodal shipment. As a result, a leaning shipment will experience delays in order to properly identify, mark, inspect and notify the internal and external parties.

BNSF’s Leaning Load Policy states: Once a shipment has been identified as a leaning load, it cannot be unloaded from a railcar, moved, or set on a chassis until the manager or supervisor secures the shipment with appropriate marking and locking procedures. In addition, the leaning shipment will not be moved until it is determined safe for movement.

At that time, a representative of BNSF will open and inspect the contents of the trailer/container to determine the cause of the leaning condition. Once the cause of the leaning condition has been established, the BNSF shipper of record will be contacted and informed of the incident. The BNSF shipper of record will be furnished with seal change documentation and a Distressed Load Report with digital photos for their records and remediation of the incident.
