Hazardous Freight Shipping Instructions Requirement Reminder: Confirm your Emergency Response Contact Number

The BNSF Hazardous Materials Team reminds intermodal customers to provide an emergency response contact number on their shipping instructions. This number must be answered by someone with knowledge of the shipment and its contents, and should be available 24/7. Recently, Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) officials have reported to BNSF their observation of increases in non-compliant emergency contact numbers during routine inspections at BNSF intermodal facilities.

Please reference 49 CFR 172.201(d) and 49 CFR 172.604 for full details regarding U.S. Department of Transportation emergency response telephone number requirements.

The penalty for failure to follow the DOT's emergency response telephone number requirements ranges from $1,000 to $7,200 per occurrence. Moreover, failure to adequately provide this information could significantly impact the safety of people responding to your shipment if it were in distress.
