BNSF Announces A New Joint Intermodal Service With Ferromex

BNSF Railway, in joint service with Ferromex (FXE), announces a new intermodal service between Chicago, Illinois and Silao, Guanajuato, Mexico via the El Paso, Texas, gateway. This new service, scheduled to begin May 27, 2014, provides customers moving products between Mexico’s Bajio region and the U.S. direct access to the advantages of intermodal rail —a simple, fast way to reduce trucking costs and delays.

The new BNSF-FXE intermodal service offers advantages such as

  • Sixth morning availability between Chicago and Silao, both southbound and northbound, beats single driver transit times.
  • Service five days a week, northbound and southbound.
  • Lower cost compared to over-the-road trucking.
  • A centrally located Silao hub (within 100 highway miles of the Bajio’s major manufacturing centers of Leon, Irapuato, Celaya, Salamanca, Queretaro and Aguascalientes), requiring fewer dray miles to and from key Mexico markets.
  • Avoids highway congestion in the U.S. and Mexico.
  • Southbound shipments do not stop at the border for customs clearance — shipments  move in-bond to Silao where customers use a customs broker of their choice to clear cargo with Mexican Customs.
  • Northbound shipments are pre-cleared with U.S. customs prior to their arrival at the US-Mexico border.

At BNSF, we're excited about providing our customers with opportunities for growth in the expanding Mexico market. For more information, visit or contact your BNSF or FXE representative.
