Q3 2017 Message from Katie Farmer

Dear BNSF Customer,

I hope you are enjoying the summer and getting to spend some time away from the office with family and friends.

I wanted to take a moment to highlight a few key projects that we are focused on this year to help expand capacity and maximize efficiencies at our intermodal facilities.

Over the years, BNSF has demonstrated a commitment to investing capital to expand and maintain our network. Since 2000, we have invested more than $55 billion in capital to ensure we operate as safely and as fluidly as possible.

BNSF works hand in hand with our carrier partners to ensure a seamless exchange as your shipment makes its way through the supply chain. Our intermodal facilities are one of the places where the crucial handoffs of cargo occur. BNSF has 25 facilities in 14 states operated by nearly 3,000 employees - it's the largest network of its kind, connecting your consumer goods to major markets and 96 percent of the U.S. population. We load and unload more than 7.5 million containers or trailers each year. That means that a BNSF crane lifts a container or trailer on or off a train about 15 times, every minute of the day.

Logistics Park Chicago Expansion Multi-Year Expansion Now in Service
We have been working on a multi-year expansion at our Logistics Park Chicago (LPC) Intermodal Facility where we added six widespan cranes and six stacking cranes that operate over newly constructed production tracks. The new widespan cranes went into operation earlier this year and this short video provides a comprehensive overview of completed expansion work at LPC.

BNSF Expanding AGS Footprint in 2017
BNSF recently completed the installation of an Automated Gate System (AGS) at the Phoenix, AZ Intermodal Facility and at the Houston, TX (Pearland) Intermodal Facility. When used in conjunction with the BNSF RailPASS mobile app, drivers can pass through the AGS in as little as 30 seconds, compared to 3-5 minutes at a traditional gate, making it easier and faster for them to move freight in and out of our facilities.

As shown in this video, AGS features biometric driver identification, license plate recognition and tire inspection portals. Simply driving through the AGS captures much of the data that was previously entered manually, dramatically reducing the amount of time that a driver spends at our gate.

We will begin construction of AGS at our St. Paul, MN Intermodal Facility later this year. Upon completion, more than 85 percent of the freight that moves into and out of our intermodal facilities across our network will travel through AGS.

Additional Hub Expansion Work
BNSF just completed expansion at our Los Angeles, CA Intermodal Facility where we added additional track and lift equipment and now we are carrying out expansion work at our San Bernardino intermodal facility. During construction, we will temporarily reduce existing transportation services into and out of San Bernardino to accommodate the construction schedule. However, additional service schedules have been added to Los Angeles to offset the reduction. This work is part of a multi-year expansion program in the Southern California region to accommodate growing demand.

We are also expanding capacity at our Corwith Intermodal Facility near Chicago and our Alliance Intermodal Facility near Dallas/Fort Worth. Specifically, we are adding production track, support track and parking at our Alliance Intermodal Facility, while adding production track and new cranes at Corwith. These projects will be completed by the end of the year.

Leadership Transition
Finally, I wanted to take a moment to thank you for the tremendous support you have shown me throughout the last few years as I have had the privilege of leading BNSF's Consumer Products Business Unit. I have enjoyed working with each of you to develop supply chain efficiencies and transportation solutions. I will be joining our operating team at BNSF leading the Service Design and Transportation Support functions.

Succeeding me will be Tom G. Williams. Tom has held various positions in Consumer Products since he joined the Santa Fe Railway Company in 1993, including as vice president, Domestic Intermodal, from November 2012 to February 2014. The Consumer Products team and I will be working closely with Tom as he transitions into his new role.

Thank you for choosing BNSF Railway as your transportation service provider and I look forward to our paths crossing again in the very near future.

With gratitude,

Katie Farmer
