A message about BNSF Intermodal

To our valued customers,

As we reflect on the first half of this challenging year, I’d like to share with you some of the positive changes we’ve been making to continue to bring you the industry’s best Intermodal service.

As always, BNSF is committed to providing service that consistently meets our customers’ expectations. In the first half of 2009, BNSF has been performing at record service levels. See how our Intermodal transit times are outperforming our goals and how, in some lanes, on-time performance is as high as 99%. With truck-like speed and consistency, our Premium and Expedited Intermodal services are averaging 600 and 800 miles per day, respectively. Overall Intermodal velocity has also improved by close to a full day since the beginning of 2008.

Upholding our focus on continuous improvement, we’ve made close to 68 Domestic Intermodal service enhancements since the beginning of 2009, based on customer needs and feedback. These enhancements include over 23 new intermodal services and enhanced service schedules on 45 different lanes, giving you the broadest Intermodal service options in the industry. These service enhancements and our facility improvements, like the opening of our new Logistics Park Memphis later this year, are helping customers like you reach new markets. To help ensure we are able to maintain a high level of service for you when volumes return, BNSF is upgrading our bridges, signals, track and technology to further increase velocity. More than half of this year’s capital plan is focused on projects like these to improve the railroad’s infrastructure. In fact, over the past 12 years BNSF has invested $30 billion in capital improvement projects to provide you the best service possible. We are committed to being the first and best choice for intermodal transport and can only do that by continually making improvements based on customer needs.
