Service Update for Thursday, March 24, 2016

The operation experienced relatively steady performance and good fluidity this week despite some service challenges associated with severe weather. Overall velocity for cars, trains and locomotives all remain very strong, but each of the averages were slightly lower versus the previous week. The average of total trains held was essentially unchanged and remains more than 63 percent better than the average for the previous March.

Our maintenance crews remain very active in the Pacific Northwest, particularly in response to rock or mud slides. Last Friday evening, a rockslide on our Bellingham Subdivision, about 40 miles north of Everett, forced a nearly 12 hour outage for track repair and cleanup work. While additional maintenance work continues in this area, train flows have normalized through the affected location.

On Tuesday, the main tracks on the Union Pacific's Lafayette Subdivision, over which BNSF operates between Beaumont, TX and Lake Charles, La., reopened following a week-long outage due to severe flooding. Track maintenance work will continue through the weekend, and some traffic may continue to experience delays through this corridor.

Economic Development: New Site Certification Program
BNSF recently announced a new Site Certification Program that identifies optimal rail-served sites that will help accelerate industrial development for customers wishing to locate along BNSF's network. This new BNSF program verifies sites are shovel-ready thereby minimizing risk during the development process.

After several months of rigorous review and analysis, we determined that industrial sites located in Shafter, Calif., Newton, Kan., Shelby, Mont., and Temple, TX achieved the distinction of demonstrating advanced readiness for industrial growth for commercial development projects. As BNSF expands the program, additional industrial sites will be added to the inventory of certified sites. Service Expectations for the Week Ahead
While Spring began earlier this week, we implemented our Winter Action Plans in several locations yesterday, from Denver eastward to Sioux City, due to heavy snow. Some ice and snow is currently falling in parts of northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin as this strong system moves northeast into Canada. Relatively dry weather will return to the Pacific Northwest next week as much of the network experiences favorable operating conditions for the final days of March.

Below is a look at the key operational performance categories for the week ending March 22:

Total trains held for the week decreased by nearly one percent from the prior week with an average of 37.3 trains held.

    Versus the March 2015 average: better by 63.3%

Total trains on the system was essentially unchanged from the prior week with an average of 1,220 trains on the system versus 1,224 during the prior week.

Locomotive velocity, measured in miles per day (MPD), was 292.7, which is down by nearly one percent from the 295.5 MPD recorded during the prior week.
    Versus the March 2015 average: better by 7.1%

Car velocity decreased by nearly three percent at 220.1 MPD versus 226.5 MPD recorded the prior week.
    Versus the March 2015 average: better by 3.8%

Train velocity decreased by nearly two percent from the prior week at 21.7 miles per hour.
    Versus the March 2015 average: better by 26.9%

Total volume was lower by nearly two percent from the prior week with 169,820 units moved in Week 11 (ending March 19).

Terminal dwell was down by nearly one percent from the prior week at 24.8 hours.
    Versus the March 2015 average: unchanged
