Midwest Rail Operations Update

Temperatures are expected to moderate, reaching into the mid-teens to mid-20's by the end of the week with a 10% - 20% chance of snow in Chicago and our northern tier.

Improving temperatures will allow for return to full-length intermodal trains and improved local dray production, which will drive necessary terminal inventory reductions and a return to more normal overall terminal and hub production levels.

While weather is expected to moderate, the most recent storm system did delay restoration of normal operations and service levels. Our 24-hour command center operations will remain in place until operations and service are fully restored.

24-hour Command Center Focal Points:

  • Redistributing traffic between BNSF intermodal facilities.
  • Coordinating with our connecting eastern carriers to use alternate gateways instead of normal Chicago interchange points.
  • Maintaining elevated levels of personnel in supervisory, hub/terminal, operations, and engineering.
  • Identifying levers for all types of rail business coordination (including but not limited to intermodal), including train blocking, right-sizing interchanges for maximum throughput, diverting traffic to alternate gateways, adjusting frequency of deliveries to match capabilities, etc.

We recognize the impact that current conditions are having on our customers and we remain committed to restoring service levels as quickly as possible.

We will continue to provide you with weekly updates until normal operations are fully restored. If you have questions, please call BNSF Customer Support at 1-888-428-2673 (select option 4, then option 3).
