BNSF Intermodal 2014 Thanksgiving Operating Plan

This year, the Thanksgiving holiday will be observed on Thursday, November 27, and Friday, November 28.

The number of trains operating on BNSF track is typically lower over the Thanksgiving holiday due to reduced freight volume. BNSF's Intermodal 2014 operating plan for the Thanksgiving holiday will adjust operations to account for this potential reduction in traffic while remaining focused on meeting customers’ expectations.

Due to lighter volumes and possible train consolidations we anticipate that outbound and inbound shipments from Thursday, November 27, through noon on Tuesday, December 2, may experience extended destination availabilities of approximately 24 to 48 hours.

Delays may occur on interline traffic if connecting carriers have reduced operations for the holiday.

For interactive tracing 365 days a year, please use BNSF’s Web Tracing tool at by logging in with your user name and password and selecting Track Your Shipment. For service issues, please call 888-428-2673 and select option 4, then option 3.

A limited staff will be available on Thanksgiving Day and Friday, November 28. Customer Support will resume standard weekend coverage Saturday, November 29.

Shipping instructions must be submitted via EDI or by using the BNSF Shipping Instructions Web tool at Faxed shipping instructions are not accepted. Assistance with shipping instructions at BNSF Waybill Solutions is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Please call 888-428-2673 and select option 3, option 2 and option 3 for assistance.

The Storage department will maintain limited staffing for 24 hours on both Thursday, November 27, and Friday, November 28, and will be staffed as usual on the weekend.

Thanksgiving Day and Friday, November 28, are U.S. holidays as outlined in the BNSF Intermodal Rules and Policies Guide and the BNSF Equipment Interchange Agreement. Below are storage rules applicable to holidays.

Storage free time is the amount of time allowed for a unit to be left at a BNSF facility once customers have been notified that the unit is available for pickup or delivery. If the Thanksgiving holiday or the Friday after Thanksgiving fall during the unit free time, the holidays will not be included in the calculation of storage charges. If notification is made on Thanksgiving Day or on Friday, November 28, the day of notification will roll to Saturday, November 29.

BNSF strongly encourages equipment pickup at facilities throughout the holiday period. Continual operations and pickups will alleviate congestion and avoid additional charges. If you have questions regarding storage, call 888-428-2673 and select option 3, option 3 and option 2.
