UPDATE: Service Interruption on the Hi Line Subdivision in Montana

BNSF is currently experiencing a service outage on our Hi Line Subdivision between Shelby and Whitefish, Montana due to an avalanche this morning near Marias Pass impacting both main tracks. Train operations through the area have been suspended and there is currently no estimated time for when this corridor will re-open to traffic.

Multiple avalanches have occurred on the eastern side of Glacier National Park after more than 50 inches of snow fell earlier this week. With blizzard conditions expected today, the risk for additional avalanches along this portion of our Hi Line Subdivision remains high. We are working closely with park officials to assess this ongoing situation and conduct any necessary remediation efforts in order to safely restore service through this area.

Winter storm warnings are in effect today and into tomorrow for other parts of our Northern Corridor as another strong storm could create some additional service challenges. Nearly a foot of snow is possible across the highest elevations of the interior Pacific Northwest with some ice accumulation also possible along our main lines between Vancouver, Wash. and Whitefish, Mont. Coastal areas, including the Seattle/Tacoma and Portland areas, will experience high winds and heavy rain with flood watches currently in effect.

BNSF operations teams have winter action plans in effect and have implemented procedures, including the re-routing of some trains to minimize disruptions as much as possible. In addition to deploying additional equipment and resources, we continue to maintain an around-the-clock response to address service interruptions from these repeated winter storms that have brought record snowfall and frigid temperatures to the North this week.
