UPDATE: Midwest Flooding Recovery Efforts

Higher water levels along the Mississippi River in Iowa and Missouri this week have forced several portions of the BNSF network that run near the river out of service. Due to multiple flood gate closures, three segments of our Hannibal Subdivision north of St. Louis are currently closed to rail traffic: between Burlington and Ft. Madison, Iowa; Keokuk, IA to near La Grange, Mo. and between Mark and Burns, Mo. The River Subdivision is out of service from Ste. Genevieve, Mo. to Cape Girardeau, Mo.

The outage affecting the main line between Burlington and Ft. Madison, Iowa is currently estimated to reopen early next week. The other outages on the Hannibal and River subdivisions are expected to remain in place through next week as water levels slowly recede. Any major rainfall or storm events in the region, however, may require adjustments to current service restoration estimates. In addition, a three-mile segment on our Brookfield Subdivision in north central Missouri, approximately 85 miles northeast of Kansas City, went out of service yesterday due to a flood gate closure. This segment is expected to reopen tomorrow.

In response to these outages, BNSF is re-routing some traffic where possible to minimize this disruption. We have also reissued embargoes involving locations affected again by high water issues, and additional locations have been added to the existing flood-related embargoes.

On the Napier Subdivision, between Pacific Junction, Iowa and Napier, Missouri, restoration projects are ongoing along a 65-mile portion of the subdivision that remains out of service. BNSF engineering teams are deploying all necessary resources and operating as efficiently as possible to restore damaged track and complete bridge reconstruction. The work is progressing on schedule with a re-opening of the entire subdivision expected in late May.
