Extreme Winter Weather Impacting Northern Corridor

Continued harsh weather conditions across much of BNSF’s Northern Corridor have created service challenges in some areas. Below zero temperatures and heavy snow in many locations across our Northwest, Montana, Powder River and Twin Cities Divisions have negatively affected normal service performance involving track and equipment, which has resulted in some train delays. In addition, a 40-mile portion of our Mobridge Subdivision near the North Dakota-South Dakota border is currently out of service as crews work to clear snow drifts as high as eight feet. We expect to have service fully restored on this subdivision this afternoon.

This active weather pattern is expected to continue into the upcoming week. More than a foot of snow is likely in the higher elevations of the Pacific Northwest through the weekend, and several inches are also possible across the Dakotas, Minnesota and into the Chicago area. In addition, even colder temperatures will move into many of these same locations by mid-week.

In response, BNSF has activated round-the-clock command centers and winter action plans to monitor conditions and manage our response to any service interruptions. We will continue to take all necessary actions, including deployment of additional heating equipment and plows, to address impacted areas. We are also prepared to implement procedures, including the re-routing of some traffic, to minimize disruption as much as possible. As always, safety is our top priority.
