Demurrage and Storage Policy Changes Effective July 15, 2014
The Surface Transportation Board (STB) has issued new rules regarding liability for demurrage charges that take effect on July 15, 2014. The new rules state that the party receiving the railcars is now responsible for demurrage charges. This means that if you currently receive railcars for other consignees, BNSF will begin billing you directly and you will be responsible for payment of any demurrage charges.
BNSF sent a Customer Advisory on June 17, 2014, informing all customers about the STB rule change. We have also updated our Demurrage Book 6004-B to align with the STB ruling, effective July 15, 2014. You will need to sign in or register on the BNSF customer login page to access the link. You can also click on the BNSF 6004 - Demurrage and Storage link on the bottom right of the customer screen at any time to find a copy of our rules.
We have created a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page specifically to address questions around the STB ruling. A link to these FAQs can be found here. Please feel free to send any questions related to the STB demurrage ruling to: DemurrageFAQs@bnsf.com.
