Reminder: Emergency Response Action Plan Required for All Canadian Flammable Liquids Shippers

Effective September 20, all shippers of flammable liquids, including ethanol, in tank cars going into, out of, or through Canada must have an ERAP (Emergency Response Action Plan) in place with Transport Canada.

This directive mandates the presence of an ERAP for shipments in loaded tank cars, regardless of the quantity, containing the following hazardous materials:

  • Ethanol (UN 1770)
  • Diesel Fuel (UN 1202)
  • Gasoline (UN 1203)
  • Petroleum Crude Oil (UN 1267)
  • Petroleum Distillates, N.O.S. (UN 1268)
  • Fuel, Aviation, Turbine Engine (UN 1863)
  • Flammable Liquid, N.O.S. (UN 1993)
  • Hydrocarbons, Liquid, N.O.S. (UN 3295)
  • Ethanol and Gasoline Mixture (UN 3475)
  • Petroleum Sour Crude Oil, Flammable, Toxic (UN 3494)
A telephone contact number and ERAP number must be placed in all billing. If an ERAP is not registered with Transport Canada, and this information is not on the billing, shipments will be stopped at the Canada-U.S. border.
