Overloaded Equipment Enhanced Notification Process – Effective March 28, 2012
To ensure rail industry safety needs are met, BNSF Railway has enhanced the process of notifying shippers when their equipment is identified as overloaded (over the designated load limit for rail car type - based on either scaled weights or shipper weights submitted on waybill).
Now, shippers who subscribe to the Overload Notices will receive specific notices that identify the type of overload issue and the necessary corrective action:
1. Billed Notification – Shipper will need to correct the weight submitted on their waybill or reduce the lading
2. Scaled Notification – Shipper will need to make arrangements with a BNSF- approved contractor to reduce the lading (list of contractors will be supplied)
3. Placement Notification – Confirms with shipper when their overloaded equipment has been placed on a reduction track for contractor to reduce the lading
4. Hazardous Notification – Shipper will need to obtain a one-time Movement Approval Form from the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA)
The list of BNSF-approved contractors is posted on bnsf.com. The list is regularly updated with current contractors.
