Hazardous Lookup Shipping Instructions Tool Enhancement

BNSF’s Shipping Instructions Tool--the secured interactive Web tool that allows you to electronically submit shipping instructions--has recently been enhanced with the following new features:

Hazardous Lookup Information
You now have the ability to create shipping patterns with a new hazardous commodity instead of calling eBusiness to have them do it for you. For your convenience, a new lookup feature has been added that will allow you to automatically pull up hazardous information pertaining to a commodity. By typing in a Standard Transportation Commodity Code (STCC) or a UN/NA number, all other related information (Proper Shipping Name, Primary Haz Class, etc.) is retrieved, so that it is unnecessary to enter that information. Note: All hazardous information will still need to be checked and verified for accuracy before submitting the Shipping Instructions.

There are two different ways to use the new hazardous lookup feature in Shipping Instructions, depending on whether you are billing or simply creating a new shipping pattern:

From a currently existing shipping pattern
From the “Carload Haz” or “Intermodal Haz” entry page, select “HazMat Entry” from the “Available Options” drop-down at the top left of the page.
The hazardous lookup is at the top of the HazMat entry page. To change the commodity from what currently exists on the pattern, enter a STCC or UN/NA number for the new commodity and click the “Search” button.
Select the proper shipping name from the drop-down box below. The hazardous details will populate in the boxes below for the new commodity. Please be sure to validate that the information is correct. Click the “Save” button to return to the main entry page.
To save this new commodity in a new pattern, select “Create a copy from the BOL” from the “Available Pattern Options” drop down on the top right of the entry page.
When copying an existing shipping pattern to create new pattern
After selecting the Pattern Maintenance option from the Shipping Instructions main menu, search for the pattern that you would like to copy from in the Pattern Maintenance section.
Next, select a pattern you would like to copy and click the “Create Copy” button. The hazardous lookup now appears on the pattern keys entry page.
To change the commodity, enter a STCC or UN/NA number for the new commodity and click the “Search” button.
Select the proper shipping name from the drop-down box below.
Click the “Save” button. On the Pattern Entry Page, select “HazMat Entry” from the “Available Options” drop-down to view the updated hazardous information.

These features will be available on Wednesday, June 21, 2006. If you have questions regarding these enhancements, please contact BNSF eBusiness general help by sending an e-mail to - an easier way to do business.
