Reminder: Dirty Car Reporting Process for Rail Controlled Equipment

In order to avoid unnecessary train delays, it is imperative for receivers unloading BNSF railcar equipment that all materials are completely removed and the car is cleaned prior to its release to the next scheduled shipper. This includes, but is not limited to, dunnage, lading or banding.

Customers that receive a car in a dirty condition should report it to BNSF by completing the steps as outlined below:

Dirty Car - Fully Loaded, Partially Loaded or Received in Error

  • Close all doors (if applicable) and e-mail CSRejectsReturns@BNSF.com, or call BNSF Customer Support (1-888-428-BNSF, option 4 than 3) for car release.

Dirty Car - Rejecting and NOT Loading
  • Take a picture of the car that includes the car mark, initials and the material in the car.
  • Upload the pictures to the BNSF Dirty Car Reporting Tool Application by logging in to the secure BNSF customer website, select "Manage" and then select the "Dirty Car Reporting Tool."
  • Release the car in the Switch & Release Tool by selecting "Release Empty & Reject Dirty." Equipment will then be sent to an authorized BNSF cleaning facility.

Dirty Car - Reporting and Loading
  • Take a picture of the car that includes the car mark, initials and the material in the car.
  • Upload the pictures to the Dirty Car Reporting Tool Application (as noted above) and notify the designated BNSF Equipment Manager that the car was dirty but will be loaded accordingly.
  • Proceed with loading the railcar. BNSF will investigate further and address the dirty car with the responsible party. Once the car is released as an empty, the car will be directed to an authorized BNSF cleaning facility.

We appreciate your assistance in helping to keep our cars clean so our trains can stay on schedule and we can provide equipment in serviceable condition.
