Network Update for Friday, September 23, 2016

Operational Performance
The operation generated good velocity and fluidity during the past week but is currently experiencing isolated service challenges between the Twin Cities and Chicago due to flooding. Heavy rainfall on Wednesday along our busy Aurora Subdivision, which runs between La Crosse, Wisconsin and Aurora, Illinois, triggered multiple washouts and caused a train derailment early Thursday morning near Lynxville, Wis., approximately 40 miles south of La Crosse. Both main tracks were forced out of service with subsequent delays to trains scheduled to move through the incident location. We have implemented procedures, including the detouring and re-routing of some trains, to minimize this disruption as much as possible. BNSF crews are completing repair work at the site, and both main tracks will return to service later tonight.

Parts of the upper Midwest, including La Crosse, are already experiencing one of their wettest Septembers on record. With more rain expected in the area this weekend, flash flood warnings remain in effect. BNSF crews continue to monitor conditions closely and will conduct more frequent inspections where necessary to ensure safe operation.

New BNSF Rail-Served Sites Now Available at Logistics Park Kansas City
North Park at Logistics Park Kansas City (LPKC), featuring 300 acres of dedicated direct-rail sites adjacent to our intermodal facility, opened for business in August. With 4,500 feet of track and a rail-served space capacity of 3.4 million square feet, North Park offers tenants the unique ability to combine BNSF’s direct-rail/carload with domestic and international intermodal service from one of the only full-service intermodal facilities in the western two-thirds of the United States. Shovel-ready sites in North Park are available for immediate development. Last week, ColdPoint Logistics, a temperature-controlled logistics leader and affiliate of NorthPoint Development, broke ground on a 163,318 square foot state-of-the-art cold storage distribution facility. Cold Point will be the first tenant to receive direct rail service at LPKC and, once operational, its facility will have a flash freeze capability that will enhance the existing export chain for frozen pork, beef and poultry.

Service Expectations for the Week Ahead
In addition to the northern Plains and upper Midwest, heavy rain is also possible in parts of Oklahoma and Texas into the start of next week as a strong cold front moves through the area. Other parts of the network will experience generally mild temperatures and favorable operating conditions for the first week of fall.

Below is a look at the key operational performance categories for the week ending Sept. 22:

Total trains held for the week was essentially unchanged with 53.6 trains held versus 56.3 trains held during the prior week.
Versus the September 2015 average: up by 15.2%

Total trains on the system was up by nearly two percent with an average of 1,438 trains on the system versus 1,413 trains during the prior week.

Locomotive velocity, measured in miles per day (MPD), was 291.7, which is essentially unchanged from the 292.2 MPD recorded the prior week.
Versus the September 2015 average: up by 2.3%

Car velocity was down by more than one percent at 222.9 MPD versus 225.4 MPD recorded the prior week.
Versus the September 2015 average: down by 0.8%

Train velocity, measured in miles per hour (MPH), was essentially unchanged from the prior week at 19.0 MPH.
Versus the September 2015 average: down by 0.6%

Total volume was up by more than six percent with 195,754 units moved in Week 37 (ending September 17) versus 184,377 units in Week 36 (ending September 10), which included the Labor Day holiday.

Terminal dwell was essentially unchanged versus the prior week at 24.0 hours.
Versus the September 2015 average: unchanged
