Service Update for Friday, March 20, 2015

Overall, the BNSF operation continues to operate with solid fluidity while continuing to effectively manage planned maintenance and expansion projects and the occasional unexpected disruptions that can sometimes occur.

The Chicago gateway is operating fluidly and the activity at the West Coast ports has been heavy as they work toward operating at full capacity. In response, BNSF has reactivated 50 locomotives from our surge fleet to meet the increased demand. We are also deploying additional well cars to support the movement of containers from those ports.

Below is a look at the key operational performance categories for the week ending March 17:

Total trains held for the week increased to an average of 121.7 versus 116.9 recorded the prior week, but is 54 percent better than the average recorded this same week in 2014.

Total trains on the system increased to 1,781, which is 4.9 percent higher than the prior week when the average was 1,698 trains on the system. Last year at this time we had an average of 1,899 trains on the system.

Locomotive velocity, measured in miles per day (MPD), was 273.4, which compares favorably to 266.1 MPD the prior week and 252.9 a year ago. Locomotive dwell was better by nearly eight percent from the prior week at 17.0 hours.

Car velocity improved slightly to 210.0 MPD versus 208.8 MPD recorded the prior week, and is more than 14 percent faster than the average recorded this same week in 2014.

Train velocity was down 1.2 percent from the prior week at 16.7 miles per hour but is 15 percent faster than the same period one year ago.

Total volume for week 10 ending March 14 was strong at 202,637 units marking the first time this year that we exceeded movement of more than 200,00 units.

Terminal dwell was improved nearly five percent to 24.3 hours versus 25.5 hours the prior week, and is nearly 18 percent better than the average from this week in 2014.
