Service Update for Friday, January 23, 2015

The operation maintained good fluidity over the past week with solid gains in train and car velocity during the period. With favorable weather conditions across much of the network and major maintenance work paused during these winter months, unit car velocity reached record levels this past weekend. Even as total volume increased by nearly nine percent over the prior week, trains holding for power declined to negligible levels. Our bolstered locomotive fleet also continues to help reduce terminal dwell, which is down by more than seven hours in the past year.

We anticipate this performance momentum to continue with milder, above average temperatures expected throughout much of the network during the upcoming week.

Below is a look at the key operational performance categories for the week ending January 20:

Total trains held for power for the week was an average of 4.4, which was two and a half trains fewer than the prior week. Total trains on the system was up nearly three percent from the prior week with an average of 1,693 trains on the system.

Locomotive velocity, measured in miles per day (MPD), was 265.7 compared to 255.9 MPD the prior week. Locomotive dwell improved more than eight percent to 20.0 hours versus 21.8 hours for the prior week.

Car velocity was better by 3.5 percent at 208.7 MPD versus 201.7 MPD recorded the prior week.

Train velocity also improved by nearly three percent at 17.7 miles per hour.

System wide on-time performance declined slightly to 77.8 percent for the week. Intermodal on-time performance also declined less than three points to 81.2 percent.

Total volume was a robust 197,163 units in Week 2 (ending January 17) and substantially higher than the 181,580 moved the prior week.

Terminal dwell decreased by over two percent at 25.5 hours versus 26.1 hours the prior week.
