BNSF Prepares for Tropical Storm Nate
BNSF has initiated emergency preparedness activities as Tropical Storm Nate approaches the Gulf Coast. The storm, which is forecasted to strengthen into a hurricane this weekend, is estimated to make landfall early Sunday morning near New Orleans. In addition to strong winds, heavy rain is expected along the Gulf Coast with flooding possible in some areas.
Our Engineering, Mechanical and Transportations teams are taking coordinated steps to maintain BNSF operations in the greater New Orleans area. Portable generators, ballast and riprap have been pre-positioned in key locations, and crews are ready to quickly respond to any washouts and the need for track repairs. We are also prepared to implement a 24/7 command center if necessary to manage storm response.
BNSF is also working closely with eastern carriers to address interchange traffic that will likely be impacted by the storm. Some trains will be rerouted through alternate gateways, including Birmingham, throughout the duration of the storm.
