Extreme Winter Weather Impacting Chicago Area Facilities

As we reported, BNSF is experiencing extreme winter weather across the northern Plains and upper Midwest, which is negatively impacting service performance in these parts of our network. Our operating crews have been confronting frigid temperatures as another significant storm is moving through the region today. Record cold temperatures are expected to follow this latest storm.

Due to these harsh conditions, we expect lower production at St. Paul and Chicago area intermodal and automotive hubs. While winter action plans are in place to minimize disruption and restore normal operations, customers may experience delays to shipments destined to these locations, as well as see traffic diversions, restrictions and specific instructions distributed to drivers. Winter command centers are operational and staffed 24x7 in order to monitor conditions and make necessary adjustments.

As conditions allow, customers are encouraged to prioritize pick up of units that have been unloaded. Prompt pick-up will help improve traffic flows, reduce lot congestion and make room for processing inbound at these facilities.
