Reminder: Complying with AAR Loading Rules

BNSF’s Load and Ride Solutions team has noted some cases recently where loads involving pipe cars have not been properly secured. In order to prevent leaning loads, we want to reinforce the following three major guidelines during loading:

  • All layers of pipe must be centered across the car (side to side)
  • Chock blocks must be tight against the side of the pipe
  • Pipe must sit on the bearing pieces and separators, not on top of the chock blocks
With BNSF’s commitment to keeping shipments fluid and safe, customers are required to comply with the AAR loading figures contained in the AAR Open Top Loading Rules Manual. Carload shippers may view these requirements in BNSF Rules Book 6100-B, Item 3035. Click here to access.

BNSF can provide contact information for load adjustment contractors who have been instructed in the AAR Open Top Loading Rules and who carry the mandatory insurance to work on BNSF property.

As a reminder, any incident caused by shipper failure to follow these rules will result in the shipper being responsible for making the necessary arrangements to correct the loading deficiencies. The shipper will also be financially responsible for the incident’s associated costs.

We encourage customers to review The Association of American Railroads (AAR)
Open Top Loading Rules Manual to ensure compliance with BNSF’s loading rules. AAR now offers a free online library to select and download various sections of the manual as well as individual rule documents and implemented circular letters: Click here to access.
