Rules Book: Revised Switching Charges for Turning of Boxcars Effective September 1, 2018

In our ongoing review of shipping rules, BNSF is making adjustments to the rule item governing the turning of boxcars for side-specific loading or unloading. Effective September 1, the following revisions to the item will be implemented to provide simplified instructions regarding these spotting requests:

Item 8100 – Switching Charges for Turning Cars to Permit Loading or Unloading at Stop-Off Points or Destinations from a Particular Side or End

    1. A request for side-specific spotting of any railcar must be made by the receiver. If a request is made to pull and re-spot a railcar for side-specific loading or unloading, BNSF will assess an intra-terminal charge in both directions in accordance with the rate in BNSF 8005-Switching Book Series. The charge will be assessed upon completion of the service.

BNSF is not responsible for side-specific spotting of railcars placarded to indicate this nature of request. Placards on railcars indicating “UNLOAD THIS SIDE”, “UNLOAD AS PLACARDED” “UNLOAD OTHER SIDE”, or similar instructions, will not be honored or recognized by BNSF.

    2. Charges as listed in paragraph (1) will be waived on staggered-door boxcars.

The above rule modification is included in the revised
BNSF Rules Book 6100-B (must be logged in to the Customer Portal for viewing).
